Maruti workers avoid working at Manesar plant: Suzuki meets Modi

Maruti Suzuki commenced operations at their Manesar plant on August 22, 2012 after lockout since July 18th, following rampant violence which left one senior officer dead and several others seriously injured. On the second day of production, Maruti Suzuki management received flak from central trade unions across various political affiliations. This was due to the fact that Maruti Suzuki had taken a decision to sack 500 workers who they feel were directly involved in the July 18th violence. Today, on the third day, only 84 workers turned up for work. Others did not report fearing backlash from sacked workers.

Trade Unions have now accused the Haryana Government for not supporting them and backing Maruti Suzuki management in this unlawful decision. Trade Union leaders have now demanded immediate reinstatement of these 546 dismissed workers and 1869 contract workers who were sacked by the company. They are also demanding withdrawal of police forces deployed across the Manesar premises to ensure law and order is maintained.

This statement was issued by the Centre for Indian Trade Unions besides other Trade Union affiliations who feel that the security forces are being employed to safeguard the interests of management which is given more priority rather than tackling the problems being faced by workers. On second day of operations, Maruti Suzuki manufactured only 16 cars while 28 cars were fully assembled. 96 casual workers were made permanent employees on Wednesday while 240 permanent and 146 casual workers were on the job.

Elsewhere in Gujarat, where Maruti Suzuki India is going to invest Rs 4,000 crores for a new manufacturing plant, Osamu Suzuki, Head, Suzuki Motors met with Narendra Modi, Chief Minister, Gujarat. The meeting was also attended by R C Bhargava, Chairman, MSI and Shinzo Nakanishi, CEO, MSI. After the meeting it was revealed, that MSI will set up a new skill development center in Gujarat.
