Q1 of the current financial year, sees Honda Motorcycle & Scooter filling in second slot after Hero in Indian two-wheeler sales, pushing Bajaj to the third position. Sales reports show that Hondas sales were 3,687 units more than that of Bajaj in the first quarter. However, it should be understood that 58% of Hondas sale come from the scooter segment, while the overall sales of Bajaj are only from motorcycles. Sales stats of sales in the domestic market in the first quarter of Honda were 622,176 units as opposed to Bajaj's 618,489 units.
According to YS Guleria, vice president-sales and marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) it's the goal of the company to sell over 27.5 lakh two wheelers in the FY12. Recent motorcycle launches will help propel the company ahead. In the near future, this company would also like to broaden its horizons to include the motorcycle segment. This is so as the sales in the motorcycle segment is will increase from 41% to 49%. A 54% increase in sales has been recorded by Honda, while hero saw an increase of 7%. TVS and Bajaj have suffered marginal losses in their sales.
Taking note on the comparisons made between motorcycles -scooter sales as opposed to motorcycle-motorcycle sales, K. Srinivas of Bajaj said that it wasn't a proper comparison basis, and the company would not take competition lightly and would compete on basis of brand strategy. He also made it kown that the company takes it's full fledged motorcycle firm repuation seriously.
