Facebook sets its sight on Expectant Mothers: New feature implemented to target ads and generate revenue

Since its launch Facebook has gone on to become the most popular social networking site. Considering this world has a hefty proportion of gullible living beings the company’s success doesn’t come as a surprise. Facebook has several features it offers its users. What may seem friendly features to a user on Facebook may not be exactly what Mark Zuckerberg and his team perceive it to be, it’s more than just that.

Every new feature introduced on Facebook is aimed at generating revenue at the cost of users spending time on the social network. A new feature on Facebook allows users to add ‘expecting’ on their timeline. The new feature allows all users who have Facebook’s Timeline profile to share the name of their unborn child, gender, and expected birth date. Social network experts believe expectant mothers will be thrilled with this feature, but trouble will brew when problems in pregnancy or miscarriages occur.

Users will be able to choose the persons they want to share this information with. In a statement Facebook said”  Life events are easy and expressive ways to mark significant moments in your life such as getting married, buying a house or traveling to new places. If you choose to, you can now share that you are expecting a baby with your friends on Facebook”.

Although a Facebook spokesman has said” Currently we are not using this life event for ad targeting” it certainly paints a pretty picture of Facebook generating huge revenues from ads with the help of this feature. Many bloggers and writers have bashed this new feature and warned the service may be shut down citing miscarriages or problems during pregnancy as the cause. What do you feel about this new Facebook feature?

Facebook: Three more Senior Executives quit as the shares of the popular social networking site continue to fall

Facebook it seems is tightening its noose and heading for the gallows. Since the social media giant started its highly anticipated IPO in May the company has been plagued with trouble. Shares which were released at a starting price of $38 have fallen to 20.72, with last week recording an all-time low of 19.82, this after the company declared its disappointing earnings.

Facebook’s initial valuation was 100 billion and this figure has now plummeted down to $43.5 billion. CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal fortune has climbed down the ladder from $13.7 billion to $10 billion. Making matters worse for Facebook is the number of top senior Executives handing over their resignations.

Five top rank employees have handed over their resignations since June. The knockout punch has come recently with Director of Platform Partnerships Ethan Beard, Mobile Platform Marketing manager Jonathan Matus and Director of Platform Marketing Katie Mitic quitting. Earlier, Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor and Director of Platform Products Carl Sjogreen had resigned. Dark clouds loom over Facebook. Is there a way out?

Facebook: The new platform of politics

In India opinion about Facebook is divided, especially amongst politicians. Many politicians are in favor of a ban of Facebook due to objectionable content posted by users. Facebook users have taken potshots at many politicians in India and most politicians don’t seem amused. However, most politicians in Bengal seem to have an affinity towards social networking sites.

In fact Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee and several of her colleagues from cabinet have chosen social networks, Facebook in particular, to express their views in regard with developments in various political segments. Facebook is definitely the new face of Bengal politics. Mamta Banarjee has over 92,000 likes on her Facebook page.

On an average each post of the 18 posts she has made on her page receives in excess of 2000 comments. Mamta Banerjee has led the way. Several politicians in Bengal are using Facebook to communicate with the masses and gain their support. Hiten Burman, Forest Minister who is an active user of Facebook told IANS” It is one of the best ways to reach out to the urban masses without being misinterpreted by the media. If you are in politics then (social networking) is a necessity”.
