Facebook has come to the rescue to trap traffic offenders and for once this social networking site is being used for something useful rather than idle gossip. Delhi Police are hoping that using this site will be effective in instilling more law and order in the city. This practice has been followed for the past two years and since that time Delhi Police have managed to book over 22000 traffic offenders which not only included common citizens but also 725 police men and a host of important personalities which abound in a city like Delhi.
Besides being used to trap offenders, the Policy Facebook page is also used as a two way communication channel for activists to voice their grievances in the hope of getting some positive reaction for the enforcers of the law. According to Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police, citizens of Delhi are now well versed with this more up to date form of communication with police and have been using this facility to report violations, traffic offenders, etc who have been caught on camera. These photographs are uploaded giving the exact time, place and date of offence which makes it easier for them to be tracked and punished under the law.
Till end of 2011, 18,297 offenders were prosecuted through this mode of lodging complaints while till June 2012 3893 offenders have been booked. Through this means of communication, V.I.Ps., Government Officials, media personnel, relatives and friends of MLAs are all under the scanner and are not spared by any vigilant and watchful citizens who care about the law and order situation of the country.
