After new Mercedes Benz B Class sports tourer, Rastatt plant rolls out first A Class compact vehicle

As a part of the Mercedes Benz 2020 growth strategy, the company has rolled out its first Mercedes Benz A Class from their plant in Rasatt. The plant was constructed at an investment of €1.2 billion and will see production of all company compact models from the plant due to its joint architecture. The Rastatt plant will produce three of the five Mercedes Benz new compact models, namely recently introduced new A-Class, new Mercedes Benz B Class, and a compact SUV.

Of the investment of €1.2 billion, €600 million investment went towards the construction of the new bodyshell and tools, €600 million will be invested during the course of the coming year for a second wave of expansion while further investments have been slated for modifications of assembly and allied equipment.

The Mercedes Benz A Class will be offered in the compact segment while a new compact SUV will be the third model to be built at Rasatt. Demand for premium compact cars are at an all time high and the company is expected to also introduce a third assembly shift in October 2012 to help keep up with demand. The new Mercedes Benz B Class went into production at Rastatt back in September 2011. The new Mercedes B Class sports tourer (hatchback) will be previewed at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida this week for the Indian luxury auto market.
