A Birkin Bentley was recently put up for auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the result has created history as this vehicle became the most expensive British car to be ever sold at a public auction. The car in question belonged to the famous watchmaker George Daniels who passed away last October.
Besides the antique car there were six other antique four wheelers and two motorcycles that were auctioned. It must be remembered that Dr. Daniels though a watchmaker by profession was a lover and collector of antique cars. He had an eye for quality, value and works of art and the funds to pander to his expensive tastes.
Birkin Bentley was a 1929 model and was previously in the possession of Sir Henry Birkin and hence its name. Bonham's Chief Executive Malcolm Barber was called in December to review the classic car collection of Daniels. Daniels and Barber had been long time associates and hence what he saw came as no surprise.
The car collection of Mr Daniels was estimated to be worth between £6 to 7 million but when it came for auction, this figure totaled £10 million. All the proceeds of the auction will be donated to the George Daniels Educational Trust to make funds available for deserving students.
