Hyundai Elantra has been adjudged "Car of the year 2011" at the seventh edition held by Nigerian Auto Awards. The events were held at Civic Centre Lagos and Elantra took top honors ahead of contenders such as Kia Optima, Toyota Avensis, Audi A6 and Land Rover HSE.
Hyundai Elantra received the coveted crown due to its fluidic shape, elegant styling and state of the art driving dynamics that is seen in the fifth generation Hyundai Elantra. This is not first time that Hyundai Elantra has been bestowed this top honor. Earlier South African Guild of Motoring Journalists and West Bank also declared Hyundai Elantra as "Car of the Year 2012".
In other awards presented, Mercedes SLK was the winner for the Best Performance Luxury Sports Car. Awards were also presented for Best Performance, Best Locally Assembled and Best Value for Money Vehicles.
Much as Hyundai Elantra may be looked upon as the Car of the Year, it has also been in the news for failing to meet 40 mpg advertising claims. The suit filed states that 40 mpg Hyundai Elantra only reflected mileage on the highway and not within city limits.
