Mercedes Benz will soon be dispatching 450 Citaro buses to SBS Transit, a transit operator based in Singapore. This will be the company's biggest Asian order to date, while deliveries are expected to commence from fall of 2012. SBS Transit is a major public transport operator in Singapore and earlier last year the company had ordered 300 Citaro while they have placed an order for an additional 450 Citaro buses thus taking the total to 750 Citaro buses in all. Mercedes Benz plans to complete the entire order by end of 2015.
Mercedes Benz Citaro is considered as the company's most successful vehicle in the bus segment. Over 33,000 such buses are produced till date in past 13 years since the bus was launched. Citaro is ideally suited for local public transportation and are manufactured at the company EvoBus plant in Mannheim. Earlier this year first series production of Citaro which meets Euro VI emission standards rolled of production lines making Citaro the cleanest service bus with a diesel engine.
Citaro are low floor buses with two doors. Measuring 12 meters in length, these buses are spacious and well designed even for old or disabled citizens to be able to manipulate their wheelchairs into the bus through the ramp. The first 13 seats are reserved for senior or handicapped passengers. Buses are air conditioned which is a necessity specially considering the climatic conditions in Singapore. Fitted with closed circuit cameras of the passenger area to enable passenger monitoring, these low emission and highly fuel efficient buses are ideally suited for inter city or urban travel.
