Former GM India boss was appointed as the managing director of Tata motors. He takes the place of Mr. PM Telang who retired this year in June. Karl Slym has wide experience dealing with Asian markets and will be a forcedto be reckoned with. Slym has been president MD, and board member of SGMW Motors, China, a General Motors JV. He will oversee operations in India, and, international markets including South Korea, Thailand, Spain, Indonesia, South Africa. JLR operations are independent of this development.
Slym takes over as Managing Director of Tata motors during a period of slow growth for the auto manufacturer. Tata is now dealing with M&M taking up leading position when it comes to utility vehicles. Tata still has control of the market where passenger cars and trucks are concerned.
Tata motors hopes that Karl Slym will have some tricks up his sleeve to help boost sales and improve growth of this brand. Some of the problems that will need to be rectified are the lack of new products and the low sales of the Tata Nano. Keeping in mind that foreign competitors have managed to convert portion of their segments into diesel it still needs to be seen whether Slym can reverse the damages though not immediately but at a gradual pace.
