While one would never consider breaking a speed record with a hybrid vehicle, but the new Volkswagen Jetta proved all such estimates wrong. The company set out to prove that their new Jetta Hybrid is highly efficient in the fast lane as well, and broke a record in the process.
This Jetta Hybrid here with Carlos Lago from Motor Trend Magazine at the controls, set the Hybrid Speed Record at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, with speeds reaching 185.394 mph (298.362 kmph) to be exact. This is by far the fastest speed ever managed in a hybrid at Bonneville.
By breaking this record, it proves that the 2013 Jetta Hybrid is definitely a class apart when it comes to high speed driving. The production variant of Jetta hybrid offers fuel economy of 45 mpg (19.13 kmpl) while having abilities to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-97 kmph) in 9.0 seconds. The Jetta Hybrid is fitted with a 1.4 liter four cylinder TSI turbo gasoline engine generating 150 hp which is mated with a seven speed DSG transmission. It also possesses an electric motor that offers additional 27 hp.
To help break this speed record, the Jetta Hybrid here was modified by Volkswagen R&D in Germany.
