Shared ownership Namma cycle public transport for a green tomorrow at Bangalore Indian Institute of Science campus

Keeping in mind increasing urbanization and pollution, Namma Cycle a private bicycling initiative was launched at the Indian institute of Science, Bangalore. Namma means 'ours' in Kannada and has been derived on the basis of shared ownership. The pilot initiative was launched by Ride a cycle Foundation, with 150 bicycles and 4 bicycle stations sponsored by TI and BCIL respectively.

The initiative was launched as studies showed that there were a number of students who bought cycles to use from transportation within the campus. With the launch of this initiative a student can register for a cycle and choose one out of the many available, once used the cycle can be returned to the nearest station.

Depending on the success of this project, it will then be expanded to a 2km radius to help students and faculty travel efficiently. Keeping in mind that the bicycle initiative is quite new to India, IISc is looking to make an example of this initiative and take it to the next level.
