Volkswagen Up! gets ASG automated manual gearbox

Volkswagen has added a new optional automated manual gearbox to their small car Up! in the UK market.  This attachment will be priced at £595 and will consist of five speed semi automatic transmission suitable for both three door and five door Up!, both in 60PS and 75PS capacities. Being automated means that transmission computer works together with stability control and ECU which indicates which gear is the most optimal for existing road conditions.

The Automated Sequential Gearbox or ASG as it is better known can be used either as regular automatic or for changing gears manually with the help of a lever. ASG increases weight by just 3 kgs more than the manual version but advantages are aplenty where it comes to improved fuel economy at 64.2 mpg UK (22.72 kmpl or 53.5 mpg US) from 62.8mpg UK ( 22.22 kmpl or 52.3mpg US) of the manual gearbox variant.

Stocks are available and British buyers can place their orders while deliveries will be effected by early October. The three door 59 bhp Move Up! ASG costs £9,675 while the five door High Up! ASG with 74 bhp is priced at £11,475. Volkswagen also has a fully electric version in the offing which is expected to enter markets early 2013.
