There is strength in numbers and this can be seen in the fact that when the Maruti Suzuki officials sacked erring workers, not only the workers from Maruti opposed the decision, but the entire Gurgaon workers union stood up against this decision. This turn of events occurred when the Maruti Manesar plant decided to sack about 500 workers who were involved in the riots which took place on July 18th, 2012.
The Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union said that it would try to gather support from other worker unions to protest against the dismissal of Maruti Manesar workers. Apart from protesting against the sacking of workers, the MUKU will also aim to vent their thoughts on abolition of contract labor and hike in minimum wages of the workers.
Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) said that the reason for terminating services of workers was that the management had lost confidence in them. Number of workers who will be dismissed will increase based on investigations. MSI has clarified that damage suffered was less than Rs 10 crores and not 110 Crore as announced earlier.
After being on a lockout for almost a month, service at the Manesar plant will resume from August 21st, 2012. Productions will start from an initial 150 units a day and gradually increase to the normal capacity of 1500-1700 units.
