Maruti Suzuki Alto, Hyundai Eon, and Chevrolet Spark will soon get a keen competitor from the Renault stables. Renault is working on developing a small car from the scratch. The new Renault small car will be powered by a 800cc vpetrol engine. Considering that 45% of the cars sold in India are small cars, Renault is now looking at the bigger picture and better future growth in India.
The vehicle in question is codenamed A Entry for the time being. It is being readied under the guidance of Gerard Detourbet, a specialist in the low cost small car department at Renault. Meanwhile, Renault is also working on a small and super efficient engine which is called B4A. This engine will be capable of 20kmpl mileage. The small entry level car will be produced and rolled out from the Renault-Nissan plant situated in Chennai but this should take another year to two to be road ready.
Renault India has great plans for the future. The company wants to scale up organization, dealerships and deliveries to 1 lakh vehicles per year with an aim to ensure Renault India in a top ten market bracket by 2013. This is going to be difficult for a company that sold just 4000 units in fiscal 2012 with hopes to touch 30,000 units in the current calendar year while targeting 1 lakh units by 2013 end.
