BMW and Toyota Motor midsized sports car concept. Future development will concentrate on the fuel cell system, sports vehicle concet, lightweight technology, and post-lithium-battery technology.
BMW and Toyota Motors Corporation (2)BMW and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) have entered into a joint agreement to build a midsized sports car as they also collaborate on the use of alternative fuels. This new midsized sports car will be developed by the end of 2013 and will be akin to others developed by Toyota such as the compact Scion FR-S with Subaru. This joint contract was signed at Toyota office in Nagoya, Japan by Toyota President Akio Toyoda and BMW Chairman, Nobert Reithofer. The two auto majors announced the construction of a new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which will include a new fuel sell stack, hydrogen tank, motor and battery pack. New lithium air battery chemistry will also be jointly developed while Toyota and BMW will also share lightweight technologies such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic which will be seen in upcoming models.
Where the new sports car is concerned, it will be a combination of Toyota’s environmentally friendly hybrid and fuel cell technology which will be seen along with an efficient and premium category vehicle from BMW. BMW will use carbon fiber composites on its upcoming i3 electric car which goes into production this year, of which the company has set a target of producing 30,000 units per annum.
