In India, zebra crossings should be present at major crossroads and strategic locations

Thermoplastic eye, road studs and traffic lights should all be used in conjunction with zebra crossings to avoid pedestrian fatalities. Nowadays, it can be seen that not only do drivers misuse zebra crossings even pedestrians do the same. Many a time's pedestrians are found crossing even though vehicles are passing. Drivers on the other hand halt their vehicles on zebra crossings making it impossible for pedestrians to cross effectively.

In present day world, expectations of empty roads or the guarantee of all at traffic signals to follow rules can be very misleading due to the number of vehicles on the roads that simply don't care much. It has been seen a number of times that citizens have unknowingly crossed the roads only to find themselves being hit as there was no zebra crossing in sight. Major roads in cities usually have zebra crossings at crossroads and strategic locations. However, this is a very difficult to spot most times because vehicles stopped at traffic signals choose to wait over the crossing making it difficult to spot.

In order to make sure that rules and regulations are followed by drivers and pedestrians alike, cameras should be used at points where zebra crossing have been painted. The government and local traffic authorities need to inculcate the proper use of zebra crossings to one and all. This should start at an early age, preferably at school so that youngsters grow up into law abiding citizens.
