Scala, the new Renault car for India has finally been launched. At a base price of Rs 6.99 lakhs, Renault Scala will compete in the C segment of sedans in Indian auto industry. Based on Nissan Sunny, Scala is the fifth car from the French auto major in India, after Fluence sedan (premium), Koleos SUV (premium), Pulse hatchback and Duster SUV. Renault Scala has the same qualities of Nissan Sunny, as they share same platform, engine specifications, powertrain, chassis and interior features. Basically, Scala is a Sunny with extended leg room and boot space with a whole lot of chrome accents and a brand new grille up front which is what tells the two apart.
Engine specs of Scala boast of the same 1.5 liter K9K diesel engine seen in Sunny. Renault sells a million units of K9K engines throughout the world. This engine offers about 86 PS power and 200 Nm torque, offering a mileage of 21.64 kmpl, while its 1.5 liter petrol counterpart is capable of 99 PS power and 134 Nm torque, offering a mileage of 16.95 kmpl. There are a number of similarities if one views the Micra, Scala, Sunny and Pulse. Dashboard, steering wheel, steering mounted audio controls, start function, ABS, brake assist, 15"alloys and airbags are common.
Scala offers a comfortable ride due to enhanced suspension, in Renault's words, its tuned for 'Indian road conditions.'. Scala can tackle corners efficiently with minimum roll but steering is not as competent as that seen in the Sunny. Scala top end model RXZ offers keyless ignition, keyless door entry, climate control and leather seats while additional air bags are offered for safety. Scala is expected to see enhanced sales as it enters a segment where growth rate is tagged at 45%. Renault Scala is also the only sedan in the segment that offers a CVT Automatic gearbox.
Renault says, they their new Scala will compete with Skoda Rapid, Maruti SX4, Honda City, Volkswagen Vento and Hyundai Verna in the Indian car market.
