Starting price for Lord Mountbatten's RR was slated at £50,000, but a vehicle with lineage such as this is sure to attract a great deal of attention from collectors at the auction being conducted by RM Auctions. This rare car was sold to an anonymous buyer for a sum of £150,000.Lord Mountbatten's 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom was up for auction last month. Painted in grey to mark his career in the Navy, this vehicle still sports the initials of the last Viceroy of India on its British registration plate. This Rolls Royce Phantom was auctioned along with 180 other classic vehicles, total auction value stands at £7.5 million.
This vehicle bears chassis 133 WJ and license plate number LM3698. It was delivered on February 24, 1930 to Lord Louis Mountbatten, then a naval officer who was also uncle to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Rolls Royce has been maintained in immaculate condition though minor flaws such as bubbling on the bonnet hinge and slight damage to driver's door can be made out. It possesses a 7.7 liter six cylinder Roller.
It was built by coachbuilders Barker and till recently was housed in the Aalholm Collection as part of the Aalholm Automobile Museum in Denmark. The Danish Auction last month, saw a total of 175 cars that belonged to Aalholm Automobil Museum in Nysted Denmark which closed its doors in 2007. RM Auctions conducted this auction.
