Renault Scala price fails to strike a chord: Nissan Sunny a better bet?

Renault launched their new car, Scala in India yesterday. Renault Scala price starts from Rs 6.99 lacs, which according to Renault is aggressive. But that is not what car buyers in India are agreeing to. Launched in the C Segment sedan of Indian car market, Renault says Scala competes with the likes of Skoda Rapid, Maruti SX4, Hyundai Verna, Honda City, and Volkswagen Vento. But if you really compare engine specs and features, the main competitors of Scala are Mauti DZire (Rs 4.88 lakhs), Tata Manza (Rs 5.70 lakhs), Toyota Etios  (Rs 5.40 lakhs), Skoda Rapid (Rs 6.92 lakhs), and of course, its cousin, Nissan Sunny (Rs 5.93 lakhs).

Firstly, its difficult to understand why the difference between petrol base variant of Renault Scala and Nissan Sunny is more than Rs 1 lakhs, after all they are the same car with different body. Other important factor is that Skoda offers Rapid at a lesser price which when comes to performance and driving pleasure, is ages ahead than Scala. Topend version of Scala, is just Rs 30,000 cheaper than Volkswagen Vento.

But then, Renault says, their target audience is the one who would like to be chauffeur driven, thanks to to the king-sized legroom. This is when all those points they made during the launch, starts making sense.

Price of Renault Scala (Ex-Delhi)

Base Petrol Scala (RxE) - Rs 6.99 lakhs
Topend Petrol Scala (RxL) - Rs 7.85 lakhs

Base Diesel Scala (RxL) - Rs 8.69 lakhs
Topend Diesel Scala (RxZ) - Rs 9.57 lakhs

Mileage / Average of Scala

Scala Petrol - 16.95 kmpl
Scala Diesel - 21.64 kmpl
