Delhi traffic scene pathetic – Vehicles travel at 5 kmph and air pollution high

The traffic scenario in India's capital is getting worse and worse as we speak. Vehicles traversing on major streets in Delhi are travelling at literally 5 kmph. This scenario is not about to change for the better by any stretch of imagination. In fact traffic congestion scene is just getting worse, quality of air is getting substandard, jams are getting longer, tempers shorter, and well we should just not venture into where it is leaving the hapless commuter in Delhi's streets. This situation is prevalent in a city where 48% of Delhi's households still do not even own cars, and safely driving along is a debated idealogy.

In a recent study conducted on Delhi's traffic congestion it was found that traffic has doubled in the past 8 to 10 years. Peak hour traffic is recording a 15 to 16 kmph speed and a road which is designed to carry 75000 vehicles per day actually carries 1.6 lakh vehicles today. This figure is expected to go upto 4 lakh vehicles in the coming 4 to 5 years. Today there are about 6 million vehicles on the streets of Delhi with about 1200 being added on an average every single day. Road experts and urban development ministers estimate that unless something is done to check this mushrooming of vehicles this situation will be reached even more rapidly.

Stricter rules and regulations, alternative traffic arrangements such as odd numbered vehicle on certain days and even numbers one alternate days, enhanced and efficient public transportation system, widening of existing roads to occupy more traffic and a change in the mindset of Delhites to abide by these rules is what is required to change around this scene for the better before it is too late.
