Facebook: The new platform of politics

In India opinion about Facebook is divided, especially amongst politicians. Many politicians are in favor of a ban of Facebook due to objectionable content posted by users. Facebook users have taken potshots at many politicians in India and most politicians don’t seem amused. However, most politicians in Bengal seem to have an affinity towards social networking sites.

In fact Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee and several of her colleagues from cabinet have chosen social networks, Facebook in particular, to express their views in regard with developments in various political segments. Facebook is definitely the new face of Bengal politics. Mamta Banarjee has over 92,000 likes on her Facebook page.

On an average each post of the 18 posts she has made on her page receives in excess of 2000 comments. Mamta Banerjee has led the way. Several politicians in Bengal are using Facebook to communicate with the masses and gain their support. Hiten Burman, Forest Minister who is an active user of Facebook told IANS” It is one of the best ways to reach out to the urban masses without being misinterpreted by the media. If you are in politics then (social networking) is a necessity”.
