At the recently concluded 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, US, there were some of the rarest and most desirable cars on display. Few of these cars had an Indian connection. One of these cars, a saffron colored 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II belonged to a royal family from Gujarat. Now in possession of Mandhatasinh Jadeja, prince of Rajkot state, this is just one of the 11 other Rolls Royce in the Maharaja's collection.
The vehicle is in perfect working order and it was this, besides its pristine condition in which it is maintained that got Rolls Royce Phantom II most amount of attention at the show from among a total of 180 vehicle which were on display at Concours d' Elegance. These 180 odd vehicles were put on show through a 75 mile long rally that took place on August 16th from Collins Field in Pebble Beach to Carmel in California.
Rolls Royce Phantom II, owned by Jadeja was designed by Henry Royce himself in 1933 and specially built for the Maharaja of Rajkot. Though it exchanged hands in 1968, great grandson of the Maharaja procured the vehicle once again in 2010 in an auction bringing it back to India after 44 years. True to its Indian ownership it sports a motto delicately inscribed in Sanskrit on its doors and windows.
