Scientists warn use of gadgets before bed can cause sleep problems

If you are the person that uses gadgets just before going to bed, you better change your ways. According to researchers, using electronic gadgets before going to bed can affect the sleep cycle. A study conducted at LRC- Light Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute reveals backlit displays on gadgets causes’ melatonin suppression which leads to sleeplessness. The chemical melatonin is responsible for changes in the body clock.

Suppression of melatonin results in disrupted sleep, or causes sleep problems. The study carried out revealed that majority of teens that spend time on gadgets are affected by this problem. Self-luminous tablet computers were used by the research team in the experiment that revealed grim facts. Director at LRCs Light And Health Program and Associate Professor at Rensselaer, Mariana Figueiro said” Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent.

Stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime. Based on these results, display manufacturers can use our model to determine how their products could affect circadian system regulation” As a part of the research study 13 individuals were asked to use self-luminous tablet computers on which they were asked to play games, watch movies and read.
